Exactly what it says on the tin: 4 instruments and a vocalist covered by two people, in real time. This is a beautifully complex song that amazed me all the way through once I took a serious look at it.
The keyboards are played by myself; the 7-string electric guitar part was performed by a friend of mine, Cary Willard, who also deserves credit for pushing me to learn this song and helping me out with the weirder parts.
Yes, we used the CD as a click track for the duet portion. That was Cary's decision, because we can't play the song live together due to the fact that I'm in Rochester and Cary's back home four hours away. Future projects will probably be done freestyle (without a click track). That's also why it was recorded in two takes: I did the intro without the click track, and then recorded the rest of the song separately.
That (really awesome sounding) low note on the organ is mis-timed simply because Timidity did a bad job of rendering my midi file, and I had to clean up the overall mix in Audacity a bit.
The video was recorded on a 4th generation iPod touch and the MIDI data with Rosegarden, which was then rendered in Timidity. The piano soundfont is Hispasonic HS Classic Grand, and the organ is from Fluid-R3. My keyboards are M-Audio's Keystation 88es and Yamaha's older PSR-270. And yes, I can do much crazier things involving both keyboards at once :)
FLAC and MP3 versions will be made available once I put a nicer master together (throw in a little reverb on the keys, EQ the guitar a bit, that sort of thing).
The music we are performing is copyright (C) 2007 by Epica and Nuclear Blast Records. This is a cover made for fun, to demonstrate our skill, to be of educational value to others seeking to learn the song, and to give Coen and Mark a challenge to keep up with. :) This video is not, and will never be, being used for any commercial purpose, nor do we believe Epica's potential for financial gain is impeded by the publishing of this video. Thus, this video falls under the Fair Use portion of United States copyright law.
Yes Coen, I saw you leave the stage for a drink during the guitar solo in Fools during your Cleveland show. You're not getting off that easy ;) if I can play it with my left hand you can most certainly play it with your right.
YouTube Content ID: FALSE POSITIVE. This was recorded in our own home studios on our own equipment and the performance is entirely original. If Warner Chappell DMCAs this video I WILL counter it.
