Moombahton is not a gimmick. Trust me. Stop the skepticism because the bus is leaving and you'll have wished you got on. The Dutch-House meets Reggaeton subgenre is invading nightclubs as the female friendly alternative to dubstep after Electronic and open format DJ's have spent the bulk of 2010 tweeting up the hype amongst each other. This can be attributed to the respect garnered by the creator, Dave Nada, one half of the Electro duo Nadastrom who have been responsible for 2 of the most ubiquitous Dance hits of the past couple years ("Pussy" and "Save Us"). When asked to DJ his cousin's high school skip party he was caught off guard and unprepared when the mostly Latino crowd wanted Bachata, Cumbia, and Reggaeton. In a blast of inspiration he realized that most Dutch House has drum tracks that are essentially spead up Reggaeton beats. He quickly took the hit song "Moombah" by Chuckie (remixed by Afrojack) and dropped it down from 130bpm to 108bpm. The result, a heavy, bassy, and more intense version of Reggaeton. After producing a number of edits using known House songs, he was pushed to produce two EP's which were released for free on T&A Records (owned by pals/DJ's Tittsworth and Ayres). The EPs caused a Twitter frenzy which quickly leaked into major media publications including Fader and Rolling Stone. One year later the music has grown from edits of previously released Dutch songs to completely original productions by international beat makers, most notably Munchi (Rotterdam, Netherlands), Sabo (New York), and David Heartbreak (Charlotte, NC). The popularity of Moombahton has even swayed Nadastrom towards branding themselves as Moombahton artists/DJ's by moving almost exclusively in that direction both live and in the studio. As evidence, at the 2011 Miami Music Week you couldn't go to a party without hearing a set played sometime during the night.
