Peace Is Possible (PIP) A parade on Danforth and Dawes Road, Toronto, Ontario Canada... even in the rain!
On Friday, July 24 from 11am to noon, despite the thunderstorms, some 200 children ages 6-12, performing artists and volunteers jubilantly marched west along the Danforth from Shopper's World, then north on Dawes Road, finishing at Taylor Creek Park.
The Peace is Possible Parade marks the culmination of three weeks of artistic workshops, involving children from day camps and community centres in and around the East York region. These workshops, facilitated by professional performing artists, help the children explore issues of social conflict in their own lives and around the world, through singing, dancing, acting, visuals, and storytelling.
Actress, dancer and musician Merril Matthews, a native of South Africa, once again served as Parade Marshal. Performing groups included The Samba Kidz, members of the Lal (a professional electronic music ensemble) and members of Mata Danze. The photographic posters were designed by the children in workshops under the guidance of photographer Sharon Vanderveen.
Workshop and Parade participants: Eastview, Toronto Boys & Girls Club - Fulll Circle Educational Recreational Child & Family Centre - West Scarborough Boys & Girls Club - Gledhill Child Care Centre.
