This school is in the heart of West Papua where school kids from grade 1 to 6 study in the same class taught by a teacher who only finished grade 9. The books they use are a bible plus some basic elementary books that only the teacher has it. The teacher teaching using common senses.

Students don't use writing books as they don't have any. Since they don't have book and other resources such as TV, Radio, Books etc etc, they don't know what a CAR, ELEPHANT, RABBIT, MONKEY, or TALL BUILDING LOOKS LIKE.

The lyrics in this song is like most lyrics in Kombai songs is about hunger.
My child, my child don't you cry.
Let me finish collect this sago
Let me finish collect this sago
After that we can go home and eat

  • Hey Joe, do you know anything about their expectation from the local govt or at least by seeing that there are other better ways of living?

I heard that the get special permit to enter Papua is not easy since that place is under closer-watch by the indonesia govt with its special task force. How did you manage to go there?

    Again, thank you

  • Honestly, I don't really know the answers for your questions. As an Indonesian, I can travel anywhere in this country and actually I've travelled to most parts of it. Believe me the diversity of this country is so huge. I am still amazed by the different languages, cultures, ethnicities etc. I guess I am lucky to be an Indonesia. It's a very beautifully colourful country.

  • I am curious. I just finished watching a show on the DOC called "Living with the Kombai Tribe: The Adventures of Mark and Olly" The video you have posted of the Kombai ladies singing, as well as many of the other films of that tribe, were part of that show. Where you there during the filming of that Documentary?

  • :) Yes. It was great fun working with them.

  • Beautiful song. I cried while I was watching this video. The blue shirt kid :( I sleep on my comfy bed. I eat anything I want. They can't. I should be grateful of everything I have. Those kids are amazing. And I'm thinking about sharing something with them. Anything. I don't know how. How?

  • mantap sobat sobat..

  • Thank you, JoeStargazer, for this whole amazing vlog!
