Hello my dear students!
I can't believe its already this time of the season. I love this time of the year not because we get cool presents, but because its a great opportunity to give.
This holiday season, with all the different charities out there, I decided to support Toys For Tots. Because, what is a childhood without toys?
Now, I remember when I was a little girl I had a Teddy Bear. His name was Borat. We had so many great memories together.. (REMEMBERING) we would eat dinners together, and play house and we played hide and seek, and do word origins together, one time Borat was a bad boy and I had to.. oh.. sorry.. got carried away there. Well.. Borat and I had an amazing life together until Gorby was introduced to him and ...well, let's just say that Borat is in Teddy Bear heaven now.
Gorby.. did you have to rip his heart out? So mean!
But this got me thinking. How did the cute cuddly bear ever get to be called a "Teddy" Bear?
HotForWords investigates the "Teddy Bear!"
Its hard to imagine, but the teddy bear has not always been around. In fact, the Teddy bear didn't arrive until something interesting happened with the 26th President of the United States.
In 1902, American President Theodore Roosevelt, or Teddy Roosevelt, as people called him, a hunting enthusiast, was invited to Mississippi for a bear hunting trip. As they day of hunting progressed, most of the other hunters had already killed animals, but Teddy had not! So a bunch of his aids, secretly chased after a bear, cornered it, clubbed it, and tied it to a tree. They then lead Roosevelt to the tied bear and said, "oh look.. there's a bear tied to that tree! Why don't you shoot it?"
Roosevelt refused to shoot the bear, saying that that would be unsportsmanlike! He turned away and told his assistants to kill the bear to put it out of its misery.
Anyway.. some a cartoonist named Clifford Berryman saw Roosevelt refuse to kill the bear and drew a cartoon titled it "Drawing the Line in Mississippi."
His initial version of the drawing had a bigger bear as you can see here.
but later on, it was redrawn, making the bear smaller and cuter as you can see here:
A couple of toy makers in New York, Morris and Rose Michtom saw the cartoon, made a cute toy bear, and decided to call it "Teddy's Bear." They wrote the president for his permission to name it that, and he agreed. At the same time, some Germans also had the brilliant idea to make toy bears, and they named them "Roosevelt Bears." Well, the toy bear crazy caught on, parents were snapping them up left and right... even Roosevelt had a toy bear by him during his re-election campaign!
With the success of the bears, the Michtoms went on to create the Ideal Toy company.. and the name Teddy Bear beat out the name Roosevelt Bear for the win!
Wow, I'm so happy! I never would have thought I'd see him again. This season, I hope to provide the same feeling for children around the world.
