Chuck Picklesimer singing his original song, "Don't Let Freedom Ring". Copyright 2004. Three old boys were shooting pool, two more were shooting shots. One old man was
shooting bull to one man who was not. A stranger in the corner shot a game of solitaire
while sipping on some coffee and wondering just how he had come this night to be this
when and where.
(Chorus)They were only treading water in a sea called, dont go far or the butterflies
will get you in the places where you are. They will flutter up around you blurring color
with their wings, til the only tune you mutter will be, dont let freedom ring. Dont let
freedom ring boys, dont let freedom yell. Shell wake you up and make you want to
dance. Dont let freedom ring boys, dont let freedom yell. Shell wake you up and
make you want to take another chance.
In walked Johnny Oakley with a guitar on his sleeve, sayin, look here boys, I got a steal
from a soldier home on leave. Its a Les Paul custom guitar with a leather hard shell case,
and a tree of life inlayed in pearl across her neck and face. Shes a mighty handsome
guitar and I think shell bring me luck. After all, I only gave that soldier boy one hundred
bucks.
(Chorus)
From the shadows came the stranger, walked right up to Johnnys side, sayin, May I see
that guitar? Shes a handsome work of pride. He looked her over closely (and) he
looked her over fine. Pulled five hundred from his wallet, said, This guitar will be
mine. But Johnny told the stranger, You do not have a deal. I bought this old guitar to
keep and to keep I think I will. But the stranger laid five hundred dollars more upon the
bar, sayin, Son take home that pile of cash, Ill take home this guitar.
Johnny knew a bargain when it hit him in the face, so he gathered up that money just like
Winning a race. He said, I thank you stranger, shes your guitar to keep. But the
stranger said, I thank you son, you sold this guitar cheap.
I dont know how I got lost in West Virginia fog, and ended at this tavern on a hill, on the
night when Johnny Oakly bought my lucky old guitar from a soldier for a hundred dollar
bill. More than thirty years ago I had a couple hits. I made a little money for a while. I
blew it all on whiskey, wild women and wine , and a couple other things that make me
smile. I finally pawned this old guitar back in Bakersfield . Pawned her off for only fifty
bucks..and as I walked away, a deaf man could hear me say, good by to my guitar and
hello to bad luck.
So open up that leather hard shell case.(there beside you) and open that pick box that
you see..and gently pull away that worn velvet lining..to the signature that I wrote
there in nineteen sixty-three(when we were) only treading water (etc. etc. to end.)
