Camouflage is vital on the non-linear battlefield where if you can be SEEN you can be HIT, if you can be hit, you can be KILLED.

A functional weak area of the parade ground appearance obsessed U.S. military is our sexy BLACK RIFLES; except for burned out areas black does not occur in nature's daytime terrain and vegetation, yet we run around in BLACK M16 assault rifles and BLACK M4 carbines as well as BLACK light, medium and heavy machine guns. There is no excuse why the expendible "furniture" on M16/M4s cannot be spray painted or McNett camo tape covered TAN without some garrison 10-20 standards "nazi" going berzerkoid.

The NATO STANAG 4179 30-round M16/M4 magazines

hand guards and butt stocks should be painted tan so only the center mechanical section and barrel ends remain in pristine, from-the-factory black parkerized. Of course we can and should buy TAN coated weapons from now on, but the garrison nazis would have to "see the light" and stop seeing "black".
Effective individual camouflage is taught at annual U.S. Army Expert Infantry Badge (EIB)Testing:

However, steel-gray 30-round M16/M4 magazines are tolerated though the weapon is wrapped in burlap, go figure.
However, all this good EIB individual camouflage through burlap or other cloth strips is NOT practiced in actual real-world combat operations. Is it a surprise that we suffer heavy casualties?

Note: There are no critical areas that don't need to be painted FROM THE BOTTOM UP. By starting there, you don't even come close to the magazine's follower. This way you don't have to waste time taping over the follower. Use paint control.
