Before 1938, the Turbo-electric vessel California of the American Line did routine service between San Francisco and New York. Here's some charming footage of a trip starting through the Panama Canal and ending in Manhattan. There's some film corrosion at the beginning of the reel, but it goes away as the home movie un-spools. Music by the incomparable Artie Shaw. Enjoy!

  • What ship is that in the first frame? Looks a bit like Santa Maria. It isn't the California, because she had a single funnel that looked like Matsonia's aft funnel, except without the blue M.

  • @uslines Yeah, apparently not everyone was hopping box cars or fleeing the dust bowl. I wonder what these people did to make money off the Depression.

  • I guess everyone didn't lose their money in the depression. Great ffotage.

  • What a neat little home movie! Cudos to Shipgeek, he's done it again!
