Knowing Fosdick's theology, or lack there of, diminishes this song to a social agenda proclamation.

As a Methodist, I prefer "work" to "serve". It means the onus is more on us, to: WORK out our own salvation... even as in the Gospel of Luke it is written, "Behold, the Kingdom of God is WITHIN YOU." It isn't up to priests but up to US...what effort we make is what success we achieve: as we come to a Christ realization.
Still all the glory is to GOD, hence we sing "work and PRAISE".

Love the ending with the choir. Beautiful

Funny, I'm Baptist and it seems as if this hymn is shared by many denominations. Awesome! May we all glorify God!

First of all, this is very beautiful. Secondly, is that a Schantz organ? There is a UMC here in Ashland, VA with a similar great/ swell/ choir layout in the chancel. Just curious.

Absolutely we must be armored in Christ-like graces in the fight to set men free.
If the whole of Christian Europe and North America is taken over by Muslims, we refuse to convert to Islam! We remain steadfast in Jesus with this hymn as our anthem!!

One word. Wow.
I can't get enough of the last verse... awesome!!!

How many ranks is that organ?
This hymn, as printed in the Lutheran Book of Worship (I'm Lutheran), differs a little. In verse two, we petition God to free our hearts to "serve" and praise.
There is also an extra verse:
Set our feet on lofty places,
Gird our lives that they may be
Armored with all Christ-like graces
In the fight to set men free.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
That we fail not man nor thee!
That we fail not man nor thee!

37 ranks, 3-manuals, very little unification, 2,444 pipes.
Yes, our Methodist and United Methodist hymnals have altered, changed/or omitted stanzas through the years. Thanks for commenting.

Nice job... especially the amen. I think that the final refrain is one of the most important parts of the hymn. I cheat when I play and sometimes transpose the last verse a half step...

Thanks! I love to use fanfare endings at the conclusion of hymns.
