Komponist: Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847) (Op. 34, No. 2)
Lyrik: Heinrich Heine (1797-1856)

Auf Flügeln des Gesanges,
Herzliebchen, trag ich dich fort,
Fort nach den Fluren des Ganges,
Dort weiß ich den schönsten Ort;
Dort liegt ein rotblühender Garten
Im stillen Mondenschein,
Die Lotosblumen erwarten
Ihr trautes Schwesterlein.
Die Veilchen kichern und kosen,
Und schaun nach den Sternen empor,
Heimlich erzählen die Rosen
Sich duftende Märchen ins Ohr.
Es hüpfen herbei und lauschen
Die frommen, klugen Gazelln,
Und in der Ferne rauschen
Des heilgen Stromes Well'n.
Dort wollen wir niedersinken
Unter dem Palmenbaum,
Und Liebe und Ruhe trinken,
Und träumen seligen Traum.

On Wings of Song
English Translation by Marty Lucas

On wings of song,
my love, I'll carry you away
to the fields of the Ganges
Where I know the most beautiful place.
There lies a red-flowering garden,
in the serene moonlight,
the lotus-flowers await
Their beloved sister.
The violets giggle and cherish,
and look up at the stars,
The roses tell each other secretly
Their fragant fairy-tales.
The gentle, bright gazelles,
pass and listen;
and in the distance murmurs
The waves of the holy stream.
There we will lay down,
under the palm-tree,
and drink of love and peacefulnes
And dream our blessed dream

  • Thanks for including the English translation!!

  • Thank you, Olga. Glad that it is of some use there. -Regards, Wendy

  • Absolute perfection. Victoria de los Angeles at her best. A beautiful voice singing a "Well kent" melody. From what I know of VdlA, she too would enjoy the singing, and the song.

  • Dear Loccness11, Thank you for the comment. Best regards, Wendy

  • A lovely lilting song and sung by the loveliest voice. Well done to give us the words. It doubles the pleasure. I'm sure they are just as poetic in Chinese.

  • Dear Barry, Thank you for the comment. I am glad that you like it too. Yes, the chinese lyrics, by some unknown person, is very beautiful as well. I felt fortunate that this song was in our high school corriculum; that was how I knew of it. Sincerely, Wendy

  • If someone likes this song, there is a curious version in the film "The silence before Bach" (Die stille vor Bach, in german, or El silencio antes de Bach, in spanish, the languages in which the film was made). with the lyrics changed narrating the story that tells how Mendelssohn discovered the scores of St Matthew's Passion by Bach. I highly reccommend it for curious people ;) It's in youtube , anyway!

  • Wow. Awesome, quaint voice there. It's so warm!!! =) Just lovely.

  • Yes, this song is a dream, which includes another, eternal dream at the end. It is a hymn.

Her voice is very pure honey, maybe too much honey. I love her, but she does not make any effort to understand what the poem is about. A very beautiful, but a little flat version of the original Heine-Mendelssohn poem.

  • wonder voice and singer. I always loved her perfect voice. but for me this is a bit too fast. the tempo should be more relaxed. although the voice is relaxed as possible.

  • Sublime. Un ensueño lirico.

  • too fast, but still nice
