the SS Norisle, the first passenger steam ship built in Canada after World War II. The Norisle is berthed at Bay Street Marina in Manitowaning (within the Township of Assiginack) on Manitoulin Island.

After retiring from service in 1974, the Norisle was purchased by the Township of Assiginack in 1975 to serve as a major tourist attraction and floating museum. She formed a part of the community's Museum Heritage Complex and was open to the public for self guided tours each summer for over 30 years. As a floating museum, the Norisle served as one of the finest examples of the ships of yesteryear that sailed the Great Lakes.

  • Time to say goodbye to this boat. I don't think they will ever raise the money to restore it and turn it into a cruise ship. If that was feasible, somebody would have purchased it and done so. I don't know if this will be able to compete with any of the modern ships as far as ammenities. This isn't a project for sentimental dreamers, and so far only minor work has been completed. It is a serious undertaking for serious business people.

  • I was a volunteer tour guide on the Norisle the first summer she arrived in Manitowaning.

  • yes i remember you

I've also heard the SS Keewatin was possibly making a trip too Thunder Bay although that is still under discussion.
