Gay in Morocco: a statement

This is a short video statement about homosexuality in Morocco. I have made a documentary on homosexuality in Kenya called 7 years, and on a trip to Morocco I took my camera with the idea of making a film on the same topic but in Morocco. I heard and read stories of Marrakech being the gay capital of North Africa and Morocco in general being relatively easy going and open towards gay and lesbians. I've spend a couple of weeks contacting people: NGO workers, human rights activists, riad owners and of course gays and lesbians. By phone and email I heard the most interesting and shocking stories of people fighting for gay rights, battling AIDS in same sex communities and living a hidden life of being married with a family during the week and going wild in gay parties and orgies in the weekend. But sadly in the relatively short period I had preparing for filming I couldn't find enough people to tell their stories in front of my camera. So this is all I could do: a short video statement.

Right now I'm preparing to make a full length documentary about homosexuality in Morocco, together with the Dutch Nafar Foundation (www.nafar.nl). We currently look for people or organisations to sponsor the project and we will probably start filming in May or June this year. If you have any advise or usefull connections that could help us realise this project please let me know!

C'est un rapport visuel court au sujet de l'homosexualité au Maroc. J'ai fait un documentaire sur l'homosexualité au Kenya appelé 7 ans, et en voyage vers le Maroc j'ai pris mon appareil-photo avec l'idée de faire un film sur la même matière mais au Maroc. J'ai entendu et ai lu des histoires de Marrakech étant le capital gai de l'Afrique du Nord et du Maroc en général étant relativement faciles à vivre et ouverts vers gai et des lesbiennes. J'ai pour passer deux ou trois semaines contactant des personnes : Ouvriers d'O.N.G., activistes de droits de l'homme, propriétaires de riad et naturellement homosexuels et lesbiennes. Par le téléphone et l'email j'ai entendu les histoires les plus intéressantes et les plus choquantes du combat de personnes pour des droits des homosexuels, luttant le SIDA dans les mêmes communautés et vie de sexe par vie cachée d'être marié avec un famille pendant la semaine et devenant comme fou en parties et orgies gaies en week-end. Mais tristement dans la période relativement courte j'ai eu la préparation au pelliculage que je ne pourrais pas trouver assez de personnes pour raconter leurs histoires devant mon appareil-photo. Ainsi c'est tout que je pourrais faire : un rapport visuel court.

En ce moment I' ; m préparant pour faire un documentaire intégral au sujet de l'homosexualité au Maroc, ainsi que la base hollandaise de Nafar (www.nafar.nl). Nous recherchons actuellement des personnes ou les organismes pour commanditer le projet et nous commencerons probablement le pelliculage en mai ou juin cette année.
