We ALL have our little "drugs" that we use to get us through our days. We use them to feel better but eventually we grow dependent and we need them and become ADDICTED. Boy/girlfriends, hopes, dreams, indulgences of any fashion, etc. ARE ALL DRUGS.

The characters dreams of a better/easier life is what caused their lives to be ruined.
