susana martinez is now new mexico's first female governor and the first female latina governor elected in the united states. our eddie garcia was at her inauguration in santa fe this morning - and joins us with the highlights. despite the brutal cold in the single digits - hundreds showed up to witness the historic inauguration in person. so help me god. with those ceremonial words, susana martinez is presented to all as the new governor of the state of new mexico. hundreds stood through the two hour inauguration despite single digit temperatures. well spoken and we're looking forward to all she's got for us, hoping for the best. martinez delivered a speech of hope and courage to tackle the state's serious problems. it hit home for jim hangen - who traveled from las cruces. as a state employee, i'm concerned with the budget and the cuts that we face - furloughs and things like that we're hoping that the budget isn't going to affect our jobs. the new governor promised to be tough on crime and those who would abuse the public trust...but not without a humorous gaffe that made even the chilliest of observers laugh. lawmakers will have no stronger adversary... i'm sorry - lawbreakers will have no stronger adversary. as a whole her message was that of unity and bipartisanship. from this moment on we must aspire together, work together, fight together, triumph together. governor martinez maintained her promise to make education a top priority and to tackle the state's giant budget crisis. back to you. moments after the inauguration - the new governor retreated indoors at the new mexico museum of art to meet with the public. hundreds waited in line for a chance to congratulate the governor and meet the states new first gentleman. the reception went on for at least an hour - the line of new mexicans stretched out the door and aund the building. in what appears to be her first official act as governor---gover nor martinez is halting regulations by executive branch agencies under her control. this is all to determine if those regulations hurt new mexico businesses. the republican governor campaigned on cutting governmental red tape to improve the business climate. and in one of her first appointments as governor, susana martinez named a long time prosecutor to replace her as district attorney in dona ana county. the las cruces sun news reports amy orlando worked with martinez on several big cases including the murder of new mexico state university student carly martinez and the baby briana case. martinez says orlando is passionate about protecting new mexico's children and families.// watch kob eyewitness news 4 at 10 for coverage of tonight's inaugural ball...and we'll have a complete look at all of today's events. we also have video of the complete inauguration on our website-- that's kob dot com.
