You don't need a certification to use these machines. They're simple to use, but slightly difficult to get the parameters right on such as "gap distance", "prefusion time", "fusion voltage", etc.
SilentKiller: The smal box in the front is called a cleaver. It cuts the fiber to give it a perfect edge. The larger box is the splice machine which attaches the 2 ends together with a very hot arc. You catch on quickly!
What gets rid of all the "gunk thats on it" is a static electricity charge that zaps any remaining dust particles on the freshly cleaved glass.

And someone that terminates fiber will charge you anywhere from $500-thousands of dollars just for one termination.
