Its the same mechanics of Mini Mario that lets him perform his alternate wall jump. The same thing applies here where for one frame, the game registers Mini Mario as being on solid ground.
I noticed this as well and tried doing that in 8-2, but with no luck unfortunately :P

@terrotim Yeah, it seems that way.
It also seems that the whole wall-catching thing has a frame rule or something... But that's just my thought on it
