I stumbled into the truck, tingles flickering throughout my entire body. I watched Joe get in, and he fastened his seat belt, his muscles flexing every time he moved. I was in a daze. Was it always like this?
I looked at the trees passing us by, and I rolled down my window, feeling the nice, cool breeze of the night. "Where are we going?" I asked after a few minutes, not recognizing where we were.
"Anywhere." Joe answered, and his hand crawled along the seat of the truck to rest on my knee.
We were silent for a few more moments, and Joe got on the highway. I looked out the window into the stars, missing Kevin a little. I felt a lump in my throat, but I swallowed it, not wanting my sadness coming back to ruin this night. I needed this night. "I miss you." I whispered, not talking to just Kevin, but to Joe too. I turned to look at him, but his eyes were fixed on the road ahead.
"You shouldn't. I'm not going anywhere." He whispered back, squeezing my knee softly.
I looked down at his hand, at the calluses, the scars, and the tanned color...true signs of a hard working man. I reached over, and placed mine on top, comparing the differences. I was pale, and I almost hand hands of a woman, small, and untouched.
I was knocked out of my train of thought by the truck bouncing, and hearing squealing noises coming from one of the back wheels. "SHIT!" Joe cursed, and swung the truck to the side of the road as smoothly as he could. We bounced some more, and the smell of burning rubber was strong. "I don't have a fucking spare." He slapped the steering wheel, and scratched his head.
I looked at him with my soft features, and reached over. I held him by the neck, and pulled him closer towards me. "It'll be okay."
"It's too far to walk home." Joe sighed, and took out his phone. "And I have no service."
"Shh." I put my finger to his lips, and kissed him softly. "There's a blanket in the back, we'll just sleep in the cab, no big deal." I smiled, running my hands through his soft hair.
"You don't mind?"
"Not at all. I can't remember the last time we had a sleepover outdoors." I said, getting comfortable. Joe got a huge smirk on his face, and I chuckled a little. "What?"
"I do."
"Oh??"
"We were in a tent in your backyard, and we played 'doctor.'" My eyes widened, and remembered how that had been my first time.
"That was really the last time we had a sleepover?" I asked, and he nodded.
"We never did spend too much time together after that." He looked down, and I bit my lip. "Until last spring, anyway."
"We just used each other for practice, I guess." I mumbled, kind of embarrassed.
"Yeah..." Joe pulled away from me slowly, and got out of the truck. I watched him examine the wheel, and then he hopped on back. "Wanna lay here and watch the stars?"
I smiled at him, and nodded, getting out. I jumped on back with him, and we laid the blankets he had there out, and laid down. With my head on his chest, I stared at the sky, him rubbing my back softly. How did I not want this?
