Current social insurance programs are both costly and antiquated. As the country faces tremendous fiscal challenges and as critical national priorities are being squeezed out, it is time to take a fresh look at reforming these programs to reflect current economic and budgetary considerations.

At this Feb. 19 event, Maya MacGuineas of the New America Foundation and Stuart Butler of The Heritage Foundation, released their paper, Rethinking Social Insurance, in which they take an in-depth look at ways to dramatically restructure social insurance. Two former directors for the Congressional Budget Office -- Alice Rivlin and Rudy Penner -- also weighed in with their thoughts.

  • sadly i believe this more than anything else i heard. Some guy gave an example how goverment programs would all due to fail.. using cars as an example, while not being flexible enough to consider -- changing the system for insurance.
