Never Retreat, ridden by the red-hot Julien Leparoux, overcame the far outside post to capture the $350,000 First Lady Stakes (gr. IT) on the Keeneland turf Oct. 8.
Charging late in the middle of the course, Never Retreat collared pacesetting Wasted Tears and edged away in deep stretch to win the one-mile event for fillies and mares by 1 1/2 lengths in a stakes-record time of 1:34.08. She broke the mark of 1:34.14 established by Gorella in 2006, and was slightly off the course record of 1:33.54 owned by Perfect Soul (2004).

Julien Leparoux's always been one of favorite jockey's that rides in America. But he's always seemed an exceptional rider on turf, in-particular. I thought he rode Never Retreat like she was the best filly in the race. I think the Irish filly, Together could've likely made the finish a little closer if Colm O'Donoghue had gotten her into the clear a little sooner, though. Thought Theysken's Theory got a horrible ride from Garrett Gomez in this race. JMO.
