Omead participated in a rural health education project with TCS Maitree during the summer of 2009. For his project, he was asked to provide a situational analysis of a community's health status and awareness, and thereafter conceptualize a realistic project plan for health education in the villages, as well as critique TCS Maitree's model of philanthropy and volunteering. Though his initial tasks were to survey the village households and maintain involvement with the secondary school, Omead expanded the project's parameters and his experience by creating additional avenues of project work, such as shadowing the local general practitioner and visiting/researching various healthcare centers near the villages. By the project's close, Omead had indeed identified several health-related concerns within the communities, such as some alcohol abuse and a lack of sanitation awareness, and had reflected these concerns to the villagers and to TCS Maitree, among other accomplishments. He hopes that this humbling experience will both shape his path to a career in medicine and force an ongoing confrontation of the problems faced by the world's marginalized communities.
