The „Izvoarele Nerei" Scientific Reserve, covering approximately 5 000 ha is one of the largest virgin forests in Europe. It is located in the Romania's Southwestern Carpathians in the Semenic Mountains. The largest trees reach diameters over 1 m and heights of about 50 meters. Nera virgin forest was established in 1975 by the management plans, first as a „forest reserve", and in 2000 came to the current status as a „scientific reserve". Cheile Nerei -- or the canyon of the Nera river -- is also situated in the Romania's Southwestern Carpathians. At the point where Nera enters Anina Mountains, the water flow has carved out a breathtaking landscape, whose most attractive part is the Nera Gorges. The geological substratum consists of karst phenomena, giving this region a very picturesque look. The vertical walls falling down to the river of this very wild rocky canyon are sporadically 400 meters high. For their beauty of limestone cliffs, high scientific value, unique karst formations, colourful forests and many species of great importance, Nera gorges can be considered as an intact corner of a virgin nature and a superb destination for adventurers, because of its isolated, authentic and dramatic wild landscapes.

  • I've seen some big beech trees but never anything over 30m. Amazing.

  • @DeltaNordicAdvance As far as I am informed even in the largest virgin beech forest of the world - Schirakami Sanchi in Japan, - there are beech trees only 29 meters tall...

  • The reason ist that Fagus crenata doesnt grow as high as Fagus sylvaticus. Great Video, btw. Know I know where to go next Summer. Some other very beatyfull mountain virginforests are on the slopes of Piatra Crauilui and Bucegi. And there is another great Beech Forest wich I consider as a virgin forest too, but it`s very unknown. It's situated on the the ridge of Magura Codlei near Brasov.
