the opening to this movie about the the history of Hawaii is truly awesome . . .

Beautiful story. I think that the vision of all the question is not simple; I don`t see the misionaries as devils or the native comunity as silly people, I only see the problems of differents cultures. The natives do what they think is correct and the occidentals have different points of view. For me is not a story of good people and bad people; Of course the character of Max von Sydow is awful sometimes, but his wife is the positive character.

An epic film of the 60's which made my imagination explode! I was still a child when this one was released, and though i heard and read a lot about it, i was not allowed to watch it! so, i never have! Silly, isn't it? Films which are now recommended for all the family, were then films for adults only! For this and for a lot of other films, i just made up a script of my own, looking at their pictures in front of the movie theaters, reading about them, and listening to their music on the radio!

i disliked Abner a lot in this movie. Not only was he annoying, but he also paid little attention to his hot smoking wife played by Julie Andrews.

@mutantking88 I used to like him... Until he said "Working with Julie Andrews made me feel the worst hatred for any human being I ever met. She is condescending and mean. She is completely phony, it takes her a million tries to get a part right because she has to be "perfect" all the time, but she never is."

@goathunta808 Ah, who cares? Think of it this way: JULIE ANDREWS PLAYED A MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY.
Now THAT is cool.

The Book was Beautiful....this seems....old. Plus the book is epic...man Abner was annoying...loved cheering agaisnt him.

just another excuse to exploit that fakeass hawaii crap

@goathunta808 Oh wait never mind. I see you are an animal killer. I don't even want to talk to you.

@goathunta808 What were the discrepancies? I saw the movie years ago but have pretty much forgotten it now. I'm thinking of reading the novel--was it any more accurate?
As a Hawaiian, I found the movie hard to watch, knowing what happened to my people. Hindsight is 20-20, as they say. While the missionaries were not the sole reason for Hawai'i's eventual occupation, they certainly didn't do anything to prevent it either, the first governor of occupied Hawai'i, the traitor Sanford B. Dole, was the son of a missionary.

@Aijamin: It was said Queen Victoria refused her Empire to take over Hawaii out of respect for Hawaiian Culture. But I guess the USA had no such empathy when it was their turn.

this movie was based on my missionary family, but a lot of it is total bull shit, and actually my great grandmother was so pissed of at this movie she made the makers of it apologize to her and the rest of our family

Hollywood never let the Truth get in the way of a good story that Why Hollywood is Fantasyland, a place of dreams. the truth is often unpleasant, often boring and only marginally profitable.
