Alarippu
• Alarippu is a Tamil word.
• It is traditionally the first dance piece that Bharatnatyam dancers learn and perform.
• Alar meaning to bloom. It comprises of set of movements without any meaning or expression.
• The movements are performed for syllables set for a beat (Tal).
• It is an item where the artist salutes the God, the Guru and the audience.
• The act is entirely based on rhythm and is focused on relaxing the body of the dancer, thereby relaxing her mind and symbolizes her awakening.
