It's weird that they changed the 3 to the all around rule in 2000. Because in men's gymnastics a total sweep of the all around happened a few times. Like in 1980, 1988 and 1992 with the soviets.

HOLY COW YOU COULD SEE THAT COMING, SHE DIDN'T GO ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF THE BEAM BEFORE TAKING OFF TO DO THAT DISMOUNT EEEK I WAS LIKE BACK UP LADY

No, they changed the rule after the Romanians swept the all-around in 2000. Stupid rule. Grrrr Bruno Grandi....

it's unfortunately true about galieva and gutsu. in the 96 olympics they had a story about it during the all around competition i believe. you prolly could find it here on youtube.

I agree with dionnewarwick. Bogi, Galieva and Lysenko qualified for AA and I think you could have three from each country back then perhaps because when the russian states broke up there would be too many if they allowed 3 from each ex-russian state. I hope that makes sense. And it was rumoured that Galieva was told to fake an injury to let Gutsu in as the coaches felt Gutsu was morelikely to win god and make them look great. A bit unfair on Galieva if it is true

the rules didn't change until after the 2000 Olympics (remember, in 2000, the Romanians went 1, 2, 3 in the all-around, at least before all that controversy began)
Does anyone know why she wasn't allowed to compete in the all-around in the Olympics? She was a much better gymnast than Boginskaya (at the time). Was it because she was Ukranian?

She did compete in the AA at the Olympics -- she placed 7th.

So, she, Boginskaya, and Gutsu were all in the AA? I'm confused because there was that whole Galieva debaucle. Could 3 athletes from one country compete in the AA back then?

Yes. Boginskaya, Lysenko, and Galieva all qualified to the AA. You couldn't substitute athletes unless there was an injury, so Galieva was "injured" in order for Gutsu to take her place.
