Both actors are great. Clint Eastwood tells how his characters differ from the ones from John Wayne and Clint even imitates him : ) The films they're talking about in the beginning are of course those from the "Dollars Trilogy". The director Clint is talking about is Don Siegel, who directed the first Dirty Harry film, and 4 other Clint Eastwood films. "The Shootist" (1976) actually was John Wayne's last film.
This fragment is from the series "Inside the Actors Studio" in 2003. The interviewer is James Lipton.
"I don't care what that kid would have done! I don't shoot him in the back!"
Wonder why people feel compelled to argue about stupid stuff like who's better CE/JW? They are both good actors and each is enjoyable to watch. I'm not one who particularly admires Fords "Cavalry" trilogy and a lot of people don't agree with me. Fine! I'm not trying to convince anyone, I just don't appreciate 'em. I do love "Stagecoach" and I am a BIG fan of the early "B" westerns with Wayne in 'em. I wish I could draw a gun like Canutt taught Wayne to do. Guess I'll have to practice.

Gotta say I think they're both on about par. JW and CE are/were amazing actors in their own right. It's a shame in my opinion that JW was only recognized formally for one movie though. He deserved a lot more than that.
