Thailand is one of the five founding member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Situated at the heart of Southeast Asia, Thailand -- formerly known as Siam -- is the only country in the region never to have been colonized by the West.

The Kingdom of Thailand has been a constitutional monarchy since 1932. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the country's head of state, has reigned for more than 60 years, making him currently the longest reigning monarch in the world.

Thailand has always attracted people from around the world, thanks to its geographical location and traditions of openness and hospitality. The people of modern Thailand are an amalgam of ethnic and religious backgrounds. While more than 95% of Thais are Buddhist, the country has always been respectful of other faiths, with the King being the patron of all religions. Thanks to the country's longstanding openness, Thai culture and traditions bear the influences of many sources, including Indian, Chinese, Khmer and Western cultures.

While Bangkok is the capital and largest city of Thailand, the diversity of Thai culture and way of life can be seen in each region of the country. From the graceful Lanna traditions of the north to the Muslim-influenced ways of the south, Thai culture is as varied and memorable as the dishes that represent each region. Yet from all these differences emerges something that is uniquely, captivatingly Thai.
