The Huns and the Admirals were the last two working dog teams in Antarctica. They left for North Quebec to the Inuit of Inukjuak in 94 due to the Antarctic treaty.

special thanks to big Chaz (the Doc)without whom this video would not have been possible.
They were based at Rothera on Adelaide Island.
Cheers to the good old boys who wintered in 93 and had the pleasure and companionship of the last Antarctic dog team.

  • A great shame, I saw the last parts of the kennels taken down in 2004.

  • yep,it was pretty sad.I helped put some of them on the Dash. The end of an era and not at all necessary.

  • the music is Pavane by Gabriel Fauré

  • It's Criminal what the Australian Government has done taking these very important research Dog Teams from Antarctica and sending them to the U.S.A.

They have No Idea what they have done. These Dog Teams are a very important part of Australian History and now it is gone, the World is laughing at us...

  • Gt film, nice to see Qimiq in the Sth. check out Last Dogs of Winter Qimmiq in Nth. Vive Le Qimmiq

  • vive Le Qimmiq a great film clip, clowns & beaurocrats strike again

  • @nuriatormen

there is no documentary. This is just edited from a private video made by the over winterers.

  • where can i find this documentary on internet?

  • I remember when Tom, Biff, Wendy, Jake and Elwood were born in the dinter of 1991! Grat film: thanks. And I remember JS arriving at Rothera. Whatever happened to him?

  • I do not get why they would ban dogs used for aiding researchers, in the lightest moving way possible. I mean sure they do not belong to Antarctic but those Inuit bred dogs can take almost any measure of cold.

  • Thanks. I was at Rothera in 84/5. Maybe some of these last were the pups born that winter. We had 3 teams then, I can't remember the name of the third team. Great days
