Guess what? Petrol is not the same thing as Petroleum (but you seem to think it is). Petroleum is crude oil. Petrol is simply a UK/Commonwealth name that evolved over time from various other names. "Gasoline" is actually an old petroleum product name and isn't exclusive to the US. Ever heard of Vaseline? Kerosene (also spelled Kerosine)? Yeah—same naming convention.
