What I would like to know is why Black people have to refer to themselves as "African American"? White people don't have to call themselves "European American"? I think the term is offensive and I don't know why so many individuals have bought into it.

Interesting commentary. As a white man from a black neighborhood, the only time I've felt inclined to use the word (but did not) is in the same sense that blacks (my friends included) used it. At times I've wished I could express the same sentiment, but even using an alternate word like, say, "home-boy" is awkward on some level, acting "black", so to speak. The only safe word is something like "bro" or "dude", which are typical "white-boy" words, and, while safe, carry divisions of their own.

Honestly i think black people say the word so much and dont let other people say the word is because they try and keep racism going and make people feel bad for them for something that happened 70 years ago just be a man and just let the crap go it freaking pisses me off. i mean you dont see Hispanic people going around saying whats up spic or a Jewish guys going around calling each other a kike or white people going around and call people crackers.
