Painting the sky gradient

This is the first in a new series of painting lessons. Unlike my previous vids which were time lapse speed painting set to music, these new videos will actually teach you how to make a finished painting. These pieces will be small, simple and easy to follow. You may take bits and pieces of these lessons and apply them to your own work or feel free to follow along and create your own version of this painting.

To download the reference file:
1. play the video in high quality fullscreen mode and pause between 1:11-1:16
2. hit print screen on your keyboard
3. Open any image editing program (you can use Windows Paint)
4. Go to: File / New
5. Go to: Edit / Paste
6. Crop and Save

I'd like to try and make these videos as interactive as possible If you decide to try this painting, take some photos or videos as you go ( most cell phones will make short videos) and post your attempts as a response. Or just let me know in the comments how it worked for you.

I'd also like some feedback on the speed. I increased the rate about 20%, mainly so i can get more into my 10 minute limit but i can slow it back down in the subsequent videos if it would help.

Please Rate, Comment and Subcribe if you like this new series.

You can now view this series in True high Definition on Vimeo:

I can only upload one per week there but resolution is fantastic and you can download the file easily.

  • Fantastic. I've just started oil painting a few months ago. This is perfect for someone like me who needs to see and understand HOW a landscape it put together.

I did the sky gradient last night. Am delighted to wake up to find the next lesson uploaded ( I'm in Australia).

  • Well done, good speed and I like the vid in high quality. Thanks for your time and great tutorial. I'm waiting for the next one!

  • It always nice to see someone who knows what they are doing. I've also noticed or it looks like you use Winton oils from Winsor Newton, am I right? I guess you don't buy into the most expensive paints are the best? Thanks for the great tutorials, it is very much appreciated!
