A photo shoot involving a teen model in New York City was abandoned after a bystander began filming her inappropriately.

The girl's mother as well as bystanders confronted the man as he began zooming in his video camera on her bottom as she was photographed doing ballet poses in Times Square.

But the man resisted efforts to stop him filming, arguing his right to videotape anything in public even after a cyclist threatened him.

The teen model and the photography crew left as the man repeatedly called the cyclist a "goober".

The exchange has since become a growing viral video hit and sparked an online debate about the rights of filming people in public places.

Photographer and outspoken free speech advocate Carlos Miller has defended the cameraman.

"So this hot chick is spreading her legs in a ballerina pose in the middle of busy Manhattan for some type of photo shoot when a random guy walks up and starts videotaping her ass," Miller wrote in his blog, Photography Is Not A Crime.

"This prompts some of her friends to berate the guy for being a pervert, even though they were essentially doing the same thing, except with still cameras."

But several commentators on Miller's blog criticised his opinion, saying that the man deserved to be harassed.

"What he was doing was technically legal, but it is antisocial, ethically wrong, and just slimy," wrote one viewer.

"I'm glad someone got in his face. Just because something is legal, doesn't make it right."
