Part 6 of 12.

From Book TV:

About the Program
From the City University of New York, authors George Galloway and Christopher Hitchens debate the war in Iraq. George Galloway, opposed to the Iraq War, is a member of the British Parliment and the author of "Mr. Galloway Goes to Washington: The Brit Who Set Congress Straight About Iraq." The book tells the story of his recent appearance before the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, where he verbally attacked U.S. Senators while responding to charges related to Iraq's oil-for-food program. Christopher Hitchens, in favor of the Iraq War, is the author of "Love, Poverty, and War: Journeys and Essays" and "Blood, Class and Empire: The Enduring Anglo-American Relationship." "Democracy Now!" radio host Amy Goodman moderates. She is the author of "The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media That Love Them."

About the Author
George Galloway is the Respect Party's Member of Parliament for Bethnal Green and Bow in London. He won the seat after his expulsion from the Labour Party for his opposition to the Iraq War. Christopher Hitchens is a contributing editor to Vanity Fair and a visiting professor of liberal studies at the New School in New York.

  • There are enough examples of Galloway's hypocrisy and demagoguery on youtube to show anyone with half a brain, that he is not a man to be taken seriously.

But based purely on this debate, it is clear that Hitchens' arguments cite facts, while Galloway uses shallow appeals to the anti-war and anti-American contingent in the audience. He's good at whipping up the emotions of the haters of Bush/Cheney, but he's the wrong man for a serious debate.

Hitchens wiped the floor with this guy.

  • Hitchens just Blows Galloway Away.

    Awesome!

  • Haha 1.44 "Try the wallet"

  • What a great debate! Both sides have venom and good arguments, I would love to see a repeat of this debate now 6 years later with the war finally over. Sadly with Hitch's passing it never will. :(

  • You can say all you want about Galloway, but on Iraq he is right. He may be a hypocrite and he may be brash, but don't let cloud the fact that he can be all those things and still correct about the war. To flip that around, Hitchens is a great intellect, a fantastic debater, and has written some great books, but that doesn't mean he can't be wrong on this.

The Iraq war was one of the greatest mistakes of our time.

  • "try the wallet?"

  • What was the thing with Gaza? I didn't get it.

  • GG: "If I can't reach your heart, let me at least reach your heads."

    Hitchens: "Try the wallet."

    Brilliant!

  • Galloway has an 8 year old's grasp of metaphor.

  • @skipscobie
