  • For decades prior to the middle 1960's, Gulf service stations were located east of the Mississippi, as well as in Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahome.

In 1964, Gulf bought Wilshire (which had service stations on the West Coast), and the next year, changed the Wilshire branding, making Gulf a coast-to-coast gasoline retailer at last.

Gulf was split later split-up--most of it was sold to Chevron, but part of it (and the Gulf name/logo) to Cumberland Farms, a Boston-based convenience store chain.

  • This commervcial likely aired between 1961 and 1963, since Gulf changed its logo in 1963 (but the new logo was not used on a widespread basis, or in Gulf advertising, until 1964).

In 1963, the new logo was in use at only a few Gulf stations and some Gulf road maps of northeastern states and cities.

  • "Altfactor" Also, this was back when one sponsor advertised on the entire tv program. "

  • It's like the Arco of back in the day.

  • This commercial probably aired many times during NBC's coerage of the Mercury space flights (which Gulf sponsored).

Inevitably, after the commercial, we'd be switched to Frank McGee who'd say "We're still holding at the Cape and don't know how long it will be until the count is resumed and (name of capsule) 7 is launched".

    Such were the days.
