This video shows a ride on the Muni F Market Streetcar Line. First some shots of Market Street around Union Square while waiting for the streetcar at 5th & Powell. Then a quick ride up Market St. past the Civic Center. Next some shots of the cars turning around at 17th & Castro, (The Castro) the end of the line. Then the return trip with views out the front window of the car from Castro to 1st & Market, which was the end of the line at that time. Final shots are of the Ferry Terminal straight ahead. Since then the line has been extended to continue on to the Ferry Terminal then it turns left along the waterfront to go to Fisherman's Wharf.

  • The bright red street cars in SF are stunning. I wish every city could have these.

Agreed, they pwn any transit vehicles made today. I wish SF could have more of them. Those red cars you talking about, I believe came from LA. They tore up those lines to build the LV Freeway system. Which is why LA sucks to this day.

  • I love that look, a old fashioned PCC with a modern day fairbox

LOL. Yeah, you'd think that someone could make a modern electronic fair box, that at least "looks" antique for these things.

  • THis makes me want to go to SF! Sadly right now the only PCC places i can go now is to Philadelphia or to Boston from NYC...

  • @Beachdudeca - ''cost ... not a lot compared to benefit'' ~ good to know. Other cities should try that as a way of attracting tourists. With the high cost of gas these alternate methods of transportation should be even more beneficial and more attractive to tourists.

  • @1400deadwood

But if you think about the big picture the cost to maintain the system is not a lot compared to the benefit.

After all how many people come to SF for the Cable Cars, heck even the 1940's street cars draw people to SF and that pays in big in the long term, not to mention the Ferries that connect us to places like Alcatraz.

Plus you have both the regional and local Rail, Bus and Ferry systems that connect all of the Bay Area.

  • @bonsema1 Dude , what is this 1.75 passengers , all of our transit tends to be pretty full and heavily used here in San Francisco.

  • @timosha21 - folks in Frisco sure are smart about transportation

  • @1400deadwood actually you forgot the Subway (BART) so its light rail, streetcars, cable cars, trackless trolley, SUBWAYS and buses.

  • 1400deadwood Take the market st line of SF Minicipal....

of course they went way over the top whith all those busses, trams and trolleys.

( and subway, and cable cars )

Pure overkill and a lot of money will do that. Especially when you notice they average about 1.75 passenger riding on them

  • it´s probably nostalgia but I haven´t rode in a better streetcar than the PCC.

In the Hague , Netherlands. These were delivered in the early fifties and I believe they are still spinning their driving wheels today ! It was the perception of clever , durable and above all good-looking american engineering.

When in SF I go to Mkt St just to ride in a PCC.

  • Interesting that you have cable cars, street cars, trolleys, and regular municipal buses in SFrancisco. I wonder if all that variety isn't a bit pricey to maintain???
