On a recent visit to the campus of Brown University, educational consultant Mark Montgomery took a few moments to reflect on what makes Brown stand out from its Ivy League sister schools. Brown is certainly the most unstructured of the Ivies, and you'll find few requirements beyond those imposed by the major. You can even take classes for credit--without the worry or hassle of grades. The idea is to let your intellect to roam free without constraints, without requirements imposed by an impersonal institution. The approach to education is a hold over from the late 1960s, when students protested to liberate themselves from the canonical approach to education that emphasized the dead whit e males.
