Members of the Westboro Baptist Church—best known for picketing the funerals of American servicemen killed overseas—showed up at Comic-Con to protest the event because they wanted to send a message that we've all "turned comic book characters into idols." But Comic-Con rallied to send its OWN message.

Church members had intended to hold their protest for an hour, but in the face of 150 to 200 counter-protesting, costumed fans carrying signs that read everything from "Odin is God" to "God loves Gay Robin," they gave up early. By the time I arrived, the handful of Comic-Con haters were already packing up and walking away with the police presence that outnumbered them, which you can see at the 24-second mark.

  • Just because people are so enthusiastic about comic book characters doesn't mean that we've turned them into idols. I haven't ever heard of a religion centered around a comic book character.

  • I saw this happeneing, it was freaking amazing! Bset part was the WBC akwardly leaving, thinking no one could see them. lawl. Best sign I had to see was "Optimus Prime died for your sins" xDD; I'm so proud of Comic-Con attendees, they're just that awesome :P

  • Why would they do this it does not make any sense? Oh wait teaching sense to the WBC is like teaching xenobiology to a creationist

  • @KrashOmnis why would the westboro baptist church protest against comic-con anyway lol...

  • I don't like WBC, but these kind of shenanigans are childish. This doesn't discredit WBC, this makes Comic-con fans appear incapable of a mature response. WBC do what they do because it gets them attention, when you do this, you garner them the attention they want. You want to stick to WBC? Ignore them, completely. They'll close up shop real fast if they stop getting media exposure. If they don't, you can still sleep well knowing no one listens to them anyway!

  • comic con isn't a religion, why r they being protested against? they are just having a lovely day out

  • don't mess with the nerds they roll deep!

  • @ThirdRAILKink I actually didn't see that one, I sure wish I did though. Amazing xD

  • @AnimentalCosplayer

I heard one of the signs read, "God needs a starship!" That's just awesome.

  • @MrCarl220 They're probably bored

  • @MrCarl220 Because they are abusing the 4th amendment for hateful disgraceful messages ex protesting at fallen soldiers funerals and they should all be shot

  • Why would they picket THIS!!
