Osoyoos area in South Central BC has the only desert region of Canada and that's where we found these beautiful yellow birds. When we got home from our trip we Googled 'Birds' and found out what kind they were. In all my years I never appreciated the variety of colorful song birds that can be seen around us, they were just 'birds.'

For some of you folks thinking this is a finch, or thinking of your American Goldfinches: good try but no cookie. This is a male Western Tanager, and he belongs to a tropical family quite separate from finches. He's quite a bit bigger than a goldfinch, and look at his longer beak. We have only a few tanagers this far north, but as you go south toward the Equator, there are lots of them. The tanager family is currently "under reconstruction" as recent DNA tests indicate different relationships.
