CHIBA, JAPAN -- Samsung Electronics and LG Display have developed prototype flexible displays that can be gently bent while continuing to show images. The displays are the latest in a line of research projects from major display makers that point to growing interest in screens that can be bent, curved or flexed.

  • Can't really see the point of bending the screen while watching it. The real benefit wil eventually (not yet) be very large, foldable and therefore portable displays. I'd love to be able to fold up, or roll up a big HDTV screen, toss it in my car and take it to a friend's house.

  • the day when they have inventd the touch, bendy, resizable smartphone-to-tablet-to-100inch television screen that has a 1080p viewing experience..then I can R.I.P. knowing one day time travel will be possible..

  • a flexible cell in iPhone third generation design - that would be the hit

  • so in 2016 you get flexible screen but without touchscreens?

  • @wheatbuck No doubt in the future 2020-2030 will be so remember displays will weight less than 1Kg so with less matterial companies and people will do more, there will be displays everywhere happening something similar to cellphones miniaturization from 90's to now.

  • In the mean time nokia has made a phone that is bendable, flexible in use. That works. It's so funny how everyone thinks nokia works at face value. Also "long way to go" lol.

  • @sfcover why is 1080 even remotely interesting as viewing experience? Go for "pixels that are so small my eyes can't tell two of them apart" and we've got an actual worthwhile goal.

  • @wheatbuck lal there are so many things you can do with it tho xP

Like having an awesome watch, or, have you ever seen one of them reflex thingies that are bendable but with a click they can stiffen up? Imagine having like the design of old maps, with 2 rolls that u roll up to see the map. Instead an OLED screen is the actual map, that u can manipulate. xP Just some thoughts. Its intresting nonetheless

  • I am jealous with this kind of tech. I am not satisfied if I just manage to buy it. But I am satisfied if I am one of the researchers who contribute to its successful production to real world.

  • Would be usefull for sim racing instead of triple screening have one screen bending around

  • @tsuchijunko sony is sht... to be honest... so expensive and even the prototype has crap graphics
