When Microsoft puts out genuinly good products like Touch (their table computer), they represent what could be the future for Microsoft (not to mention their fabulous peripherals). When Sun puts out things like Open Office, and Cannonical puts out Ubuntu; this tends to make selling operating systems and office suites an obsolete strategy in the long run.
Good luck to them(Microsoft) though, they do make very nice peripherals, and as I've said, their touch table is well worth selling.

The one problem windows will never overcome is that Linux is free.
Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon has Compiz-Fusion pre-loaded and is free. The world's most advanced desktop system free. No charge. On a windows system these effects would take a rather larger ammount of system resources than Ubuntu would.
It is a vast improvement to the Windows environent, but does not hold a candle to Linux. Unfortunately (for Microsoft), the future for operating systems, as Neal Stphenson says, is to become free.
