JULY 21, WASHINGTON -- On America's Newsroom this morning, Sen. Sessions continued to raise concerns about the Gang of Six outline, which he called "the suggestion of the day." Without legislative text that can be scored and analyzed, Sessions said, the draft proposal is little more than talking points that appear to call for tax hikes of between $1-$2 trillion.
Sessions also pushed back against Sen. Conrad's suggestion that the Gang's plan effectively broadens the base and reduces rates (in other words, that it eliminates deductions to pay for a lowering of marginal rates). Said Sessions: "Simplifying and reducing rates is a good goal. But it's hard to say you're reducing rates when you acknowledge that net taxes are going to go up $1 trillion over what's being paid today. So that's the little gamesmanship."
