  • @ThePatriotinTexas While Schlage Link is very limited compared to Vera, they are catching up (iPad app, sensor support, new cameras and hadware slated for summer 2011) and their tech support is top notch. I really like the plug and play aspect of Schlage and its well worth the $9 fee.

  • The problem with Vera....a bunch of talented engineers who seem to lack any kind of business sense. I love the product, but am completely frustrated with lack of resolution to problems I've been having with the product's operation. It takes them weeks to get back to you and you only get a vague answer and must remind them you still have the problem. I'm to the point I'd rather pay the $99 a year for the LiNK just to step away from the problem!

  • Well, there is a cheaper solution. Vera from MiCasaVerde-dot-com is a totally open system based on the same wireless Z-wave system as Schlage Link. But the Vera service is free (basic) to $30/year for enhanced (seems comparable to Schlage's $150/year service). You can get Vera from SmartHome-dot-com, and it presumably works with a wide range of Z-wave components including locksets. Not sure if it works with Schlage but if not there are likely others or should be soon.

  • Fine print: $12.99/month... Srsly? $150/year for online access? That's after I spend $800 for the starter set and two additional locks? Or is that $1400 if I need to get a deadbolt and lever for each door? Ouch. Very cool system, especially with the webcam and thermostat integration (thermostat sold separately, of course), but I wish the monthly fee wasn't so steep.
