Chapter Two: [Unconditional Like]

Untangling ourselves from each other's grip, we smiled lightly, and he let me in his house. I could not be convinced that four boys lived in such a beautiful and neatly-kempt home.

Nick, noticing how slightly uncomfortable I was, gestured that I could sit down if I wanted to. I accepted, and slowly lowered myself onto the fluffy leather couch that sat in the middle of the living room.

"Whoa, who's this?" exclaimed boy with dark curly hair, as he jogged down the stairs.
I began to reply, but Nick answered first, saying "This is Jessica. Jessica, this is my brother Joseph. You don't have to like him, I barely do", he joked.
I retorted with a light giggle, "Aw, no. He's cute---I mean cool! He seems cool!" Joseph caught the slip, sat on the couch next to me and nudged my arm, saying "Pshh, you think I'm cute too." I smiled nervously, and played with the ring on my right finger as I waited for my cheeks to return to their natural color, instead of the blush-red that I was sure they were.
Noticing another boy walking down the stairs, who looked slightly more mature than the other two, I laughed and said "So you all have the curls thing going on, huh?"
Nick laughed a little also, "Eh, they copied me", he joked, and continued "Jessica, that's my oldest brother Kevin. Kev, this is Jessica"
I waved as he flashed a smile and sat in the empty space next to Joseph on the couch.
I hadn't yet met the brothers, with the exception of Nick and Frankie, until then, because in the week that we'd been in California, I had never been to their house.
A few awkward minutes trailed by and Kevin decided to break the silence.
"So where are you from?"
Confused by the question, I slightly furrowed my brow, and offered the best answer I could think of. "Well, I moved from New York."
Joseph's face lit up, as if, all of a sudden, he wanted to know more about me. "Why'd you move? Your parents not like it there or something?"
I shifted my body a little, and turned my face away from the television, which was now on, to Joseph. "Honestly, I don't know. My Mom likes a change every so often, so I guess that's why."
Joseph shrugged his shoulders a little, satisfied with the answer I had provided. This was great, because I really didn't want to get into specifics.
The time passed by, more quickly than I had hoped, and as the sun began to set, I let the guys know that I had to go home. Nick went to the back yard, where Frankie and Arianna played, and told him that she had to go home. Frankie pouted, and dragged his feet all the way to the living room, where Kevin, Joseph, and I were. I reassured Frankie that Arianna could come over tomorrow, if it was okay, and gave him a hug. Exchanging "Nice to meet you"s and "See you soon"s, I gave each brother a hug, and grabbed my little sister's hand, heading toward our house a few feet away. As we walked, I felt the boys still in their doorway, watching us walk inside; to make sure we got there safely. What a perfect ending to a wonderful day. Right? Wrong.
Minutes later, my eldest sister, Charlotte walked into the house, tears streaming down her face. Without even asking, I already knew that her jerk of a boyfriend dumped her, again. But I knew, and I knew that she knew, that this was the last time. They were over, and she needed to move on, for her own sake.
Kevin! My sister was twenty, and even though I pretended that I knew nothing about the boys, I knew that he was twenty also. Running upstairs excitedly, and arriving at the window in my room, I grabbed an empty Poland Spring bottle off of my desk and threw it at Nick's window. I hoped that it had made enough noise for him to hear it, and sure enough, it did.
Laughing, Nick joked "You know, you're going to run out of stuff to throw at my window, eventually."
Giggling also, I replied "Yeah, but not yet." I smiled menacingly and he sighed playfully.
"What am I going to do with you, Jessica?" He laughed and shook his head side to side, shaking his lush curls in the dusk breeze.
