It takes 5 seconds to do the same thing in Apple Keynote using the 'instant alpha' tool. Even if you were persisting with the shamefully bad Notebook software, you could open your image in Preview (included in OS X) and use instant alpha there and paste into Notebook.
Please could the people who make Notebook look at how good software works on a Mac and take note. If you're used to iWork you will hate Notebook 10. And your pupils will think they have timewarped back to 1992 and WIndows 3.1.
