Excuse me, but GEs NY research laboratory is a well known joke. They playoff one scientist against another, an idea they got from Bell Labs (now Lucent) and was later used at Enron. This one policy guarantees that nothing gets accomplished, as most commercial technologies are too complicated for one person. They also force scientists to solicit funds to perform research. Most scientists arent exactly adept (or interested) at fund raising. GEs $500b collapse since 99 is hardly a mystery.
