The world's growing appetite for beef is having a devastating impact on the Amazon.

Environmentalists say expansion by cattle ranchers is responsible for the destruction of between 70 and 80 per cent of the rainforests.

Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo went to the slaughterhouses of Maraba, in northern Brazil, to find out more.

  • AlJazeera is teaching us how journalism is made. Thanks!

  • The common answer from a brazilian, when confronted about cutting down the Amazon basin for cattle pastures, is 'Amazon is ours, we have the right to do whatever we please with it'. This is to irresponsible and selfish on a global scale. The world's ecosystem depends on the 'lungs of the planet', yet these 'free consumers' want to expand their booming economy and make some money for a short-term.

  • An interesting report. Thanks AlJazeera.
