Dr. M. Gilchrist on avian flu, bioterrorism, & public health

Internationally recognized public health expert Dr. Mary Gilchrist is interviewed in this 29 minute program.

Gilchrist is the recently ousted director of the University Hygienic Lab at the University of Iowa. She was asking for lab space for state public health that would provide for a pandemic of avian influenza (among other health threats).

In her lawsuit against UI President Gary Fethke and UI VP of Research Meredith Hay she says that Hay cut 12,000 feet of new lab space and that Fethke told her, "You stuck your neck out for what you believed in and we just can't live with it."

The Pentagon ordered $58 million of Tamiflu for troops. Then, Bush ordered states to buy over $500 million of Tamiflu. Tamiflu is manufactured and marketed by Roche, and Glead receives a 10% royalty. Rumsfeld served as chairman of Gilead before joining the Bush administration and still holds between $5 and 25 million in the company. He reportedly sold shares worth $5 million in 2005.
