Jeff Skoll receives the Tech Museum's 2011 James Morgan Humanitarian Award. Part 3. "Discoveries and improvements involve the cooperation of many minds. I appreciate the Tech Museum's commitment to cultivating the Power of Many. Tech laureates become a part of a rich community. The Skoll Foundation unites its awardees and key partners at the Skoll World Forum for Social Entrepreneurship at Oxford. But Global Problems are complex, and when system level changes are needed, the power of one, and often the power of many won't do. Sometimes, we need the power of a great many to move things forward. One person that recognized this was Gandhi. When Gandhi was a young man, he recognized that newspapers could galvanize great numbers of people to take action. It was an important part of his strategy to move public opinion. He knew that a story well told would stimulate public will and that mass media could be the catalyst. In 2004, I started Participant Media, devoted to entertainment that inspires and compels social change. Since, then we've release an Inconvenient Truth, the Cove, Waiting for Superman...among some, and these films have won 4 Academy Awards and 18 Oscar nominations."
