Hemant Kumar & Lata - Jaag Dard-e-Ishq Jaag - Anarkali [1953]

"Anarkali" (Hindi:, Urdu: اناركلی ) is a 1953 film based on the historical legend of the Mughal emperor Jahangir. As per the legend Jahangir revolted against his father Akbar over his love for a common girl called Anarkali. It was the top grossing Hindi film in the year of its release, and one of the biggest Hindi film hits in its decade. Another film on the same theme was Mughal-e-Azam, made in 1960, which was again a major commercial and critical hit.

Directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal and written by Nasir Hussain.
Starring Pradeep Kumar, Bina Rai and Noor Jehan.
Music is by C. Ramachandra.
Lyrics by Rajinder Krishan.

The movie today is mainly remembered for its outstanding musical score. C. Ramachandra came up with what was perhaps the best musical score of his career.

The movie has many famous songs, songs that became part of the collective psyche of Indian music lovers. Lata Mangeshkar, the queen of Indian melody, who was already a phenomenon, reached even greater heights with her songs for this movie which can only be described as angelic........

Hemanta Kumar Mukhopadhyay (Bangla: Hemonto Kumar Mukhopaddhae) also known as Hemanta Mukherjee (June 16, 1920 September 26, 1989) was an Indian singer, composer and producer. He sang in Hindi films under the name Hemant Kumar.

Hemanta was born in the city of Varanasi, India. His family hailed from a village named Baharu in West Bengal. They migrated to Calcutta in the early 20th century. Hemanta grew up there and attended Mitra Institution school of Bhawanipore area. There he met his longtime friend, Subhas Mukhopadhyay who later became a Bengali poet. After passing the intermediate examinations (12th grade), Hemanta was admitted to Jadavpur University to study Engineering. However, he quit academics to pursue a career in music, despite parental objection. He briefly tried his hand at literature and also published a short story in a prestigious Bengali magazine called Desh, but by the late-1930s he was committed entirely to music.

His first Hindi film songs were in Irada in 1944 under Pt. Amarnath's music direction. Lyrics were by Aziz Kashmiri.
His first movie as a music director was the Bengali film Abhiyatri in 1947. Although many of the songs Hemanta recorded in during this time received critical acclaim, major commercial success still eluded him, right until 1947. Some contemporary male singers of Hemanta in Bengali around that period were Jaganmay Mitra, Robin Majumdar, Satya Chowdhury, Dhananjay Bhattacharya, Sudhirlal Chakraborty, Bechu Dutta and Talat Mahmood.

In September 1989, he travelled to Dhaka, Bangladesh to receive the Michael Madhusudan Award. He performed a concert in Dhaka as well. Immediately after returning from this trip, he suffered a major cardiac arrest on September 26 and breathed his last at 11:15 pm in a nursing home in South Calcutta. Interestingly, even 15 years after his death, Gramophone Company of India releases at least one album by him every year, repackaging his older songs, because of the commercial viability of his songs. His legacy still lives on through the numerous songs he has recorded, music he has composed and through many male singers in Bengal and the rest of India who continue to imitate his singing style...........

Lata Mangeshkar (Marathi: लता मंगेशकर; born September 28, 1929) is a singer from India. She is one of the best-known playback singers in the Hindi film industry. Mangeshkar's career started in 1942 and has spanned over six and a half decades. She sang in over a thousand Bollywood movies and has sung songs in over twenty regional Indian languages, but primarily in Hindi. She is the elder sister of the equally accomplished singer Asha Bhosle and lesser-known singers, brother Hridayanath Mangeshkar and sisters Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Mangeshkar. Lata is the second vocalist ever to have received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.

Mangeshkar was featured in the Guinness Book of World Records from 1974 to 1991 for having made the most recordings in the world.

Lata Mangeshkar has won several awards and honors, including Padma Bhushan (1969), Padma Vibhushan (1999), Dada Saheb Phalke Award (1989), NTR National Award (1999), Bharat Ratna (2001), three National Film Awards, and 12 Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards. She has also won four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards. In 1969, she made the unusual gesture of giving up the Filmfare Best Female Playback Award, in order to promote fresh talent. She was later awarded Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993.

If I am not mistaken this the first duet of Hemant Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar. It became super hit. C. Ram Chandra was the composer of this film. He created such tunes that are still popular. My favourite song. 21-12-2010

@chandrashekharjain - Just went through Wikipedia and found to my dismay that Bina Rai died on the 6th of December 2009, just an year back.

Such a wonderful personality and a beautiful/talented actress..
