A quick-hit lesson from the Crossroads in Oxford, Mississippi on the harp riff from "Got My Mojo Working." Your host is Adam Gussow from Satan and Adam, the Harlem blues duo. Gussow is using an A harp in this video.

If you're interested in studying this tune in depth, you might want to check out the 45-minute video tutorial and tab available at Modern Blues Harmonica:

The Crossroads, for those who might be crazy enough to make a blues pilgrimage, is located at the intersection of Rt. 314 and Buford Chapel Road in Lafayette County, Mississippi, a mile or so outside the city limits of Oxford:

  • Adam... trust you to drive a truck that has a gear shift like a harp mic! ;-) Dr G can I ask you for a piece of advice?

I think the time has come for me to get a rig together... I've already decided on a mic (SM57) but only really have the dough to spring for one pedal.

What would you recommend as the first pedal choice for someone chasing that chicago sound? Thanks!

  • Hard to say. I've used a Boss DD-2 and DD-3 for the past 25 years. That's all I've used. I don't really know pedals. Jason Ricci has several terrific videos on the question of pedals. Check 'em out.

  • AWESOME! Your videos have a distinct peorsonal style!

Off-topic: Is the front car number optional in Mississippi:)?

  • No, they're not even optional. You're not allowed to have them.

  • Liked the lesson, loved the truck! I didn't like the video frame rate though. Have you started encoding differnetly, or been using different compression rate?

  • Haven't changed a thing. Could be the low strong sun, I suppose.

  • I purchased Adam's 45 minute video of Mojo for only a few bucks at tradebit.com. I'm an advanced beginner harp player and though some of the lesson was tough, I got the first twelve bar intro down in about a week (approx 2 hours of practice). Still needs tweaking and getting up to speed but Adam's instructional video with the tab is fantastic! Slow, steady and with lots of nuance. Highly recommend.

  • Cruel Harpwork, cruel Truck!

Nice Tune in both of ém

  • Hi Adam! I'll take you up on this! PLEASE talk about bending while tongue blocking. I'd also like to throw in my nickel's worth... I don't think it matters which way you play when you play. IF you can make it work for you, IF you tape yourself and it sounds right, then do it in that way. Everybody is different. Jerry Portnoy talks about lip pursing on the first three then tongue blocking four and up. I find that the more you can comfortably shift styles, the more versatile you'll be.

  • Butterfield has a great version of this blues topic.

  • I have done actually, that's why I'm going for the SM57(!). But seeing that it was with your videos' help that I've learnt the instrument, I thought it best to ask the boss man first... as always Adam: thanks for everything.

  • love the truck!! i`m looking to get me an old 50`s or 60`s ford f100 next summer

  • good stuff
