Horse Loggin' with Chad Miano, Dylan Miano, and Bob. Filming and Comments by Andon Zebal of Restoring the Americas.

Restoring the Americas tells the story of one young man searching the world for anything that can help people make a living from forests without destroying them. Check it out at: http://restoringtheamericas.blogspot.com/2009/03/horse-logging-stories-and-vi...

The video takes look at some of the methods used in horse logging on a boundary in Lee County, Virginia. Appalachian Sustainable Development parters with local landowners to provide land management plans and hire sustainable loggers. The wood obtained from the jobs is sent to the Sustainable Woods processing center in Castlewood, Virginia and transformed into flooring. More info: http://www.sustainablewoods.biz/

We're using a cable hooked around a tree so the horses can go straight

The cable forms a "V" getting straighter as the log comes up the hill

We re-rigged the cables so the log would shift around the tree

Chad's Suffolk horses know their names and a lot of commands

He gives the forest room to grow by pulling fewer trees and cutting sick trees

Horses in the forest make much less of an impact than skidders

The point is really not about trying to go back to the old ways

Its to use all our technology, new and old, to make logging more sustainable

Thank you!

  • dudes... would be better to hang a block or two from trees that have inner tubes wrapped around them, high, to get lift instead of dragging down thru the duff like this. LIFT LIFT, LiFT.

  • @joeshittheragman1 But how long would it take to set that up?

  • Very good, excellent to see a bit of thoughtful horsemanship especially Suffolk Punches, they're getting rare in the UK these days glad to see them in use in the USA. Well done you, keep it going, the sweeter horses are handled the better the image the woodman, I know that well enough myself.

  • 0:30-0:57 who needs machines? 0.0

  • @iancubrez One Belgian probably could pull that log, but for a very limited distance. In a team, the job will get done more efficiently, with less needed breaks for the horses. Plus most forecarts (like the one he's driving in the video) are pulled by teams.

  • That's ah WILD man....!

  • So neat! Makes you proud of the hard work horses can do and the capable men that train and handle them. I'm impressed! People that say mean things have never worked like you men do!

  • Well seems there are some mean mouth comments on this video. I am amazed that this kind of comment is allowed on any site, but guess that is the choice of some folks that must make themselves feel better by talking trash about someone they will never meet or actually know. Their is no one horse on the planet that will pull that log and that includes Romania. I won't hide my name or talk trash about anyone doing good work with horses. ~ Jason Rutledge

  • pretty intresting tecnology.

  • fat fucker with his big arse in a cart isn't helping them horses too much
